Nepal’s flooding and potential impacts on tours, 2024
Nepal’s flooding and potential impacts on tours, 2024 Overview
Nepal’s unique geography, ranging from the lowland Terai plains to the high Himalayan peaks, makes the country particularly vulnerable to Nepal’s flooding during the monsoon season. Each year, heavy rains trigger flash floods, landslides, and riverbank erosion, affecting communities, infrastructure, and natural habitats. These environmental challenges directly impact the tourism sector, which relies on safe and accessible travel routes, trekking trails, and cultural sites. Travelers planning tours to Nepal may encounter closed roads, delayed flights, canceled treks, and limited access to popular destinations like Chitwan National Park, Pokhara, and the Annapurna region due to Nepal’s flooding. Local tour operators and guides adapt by offering alternative routes, adjusting itineraries, and providing real-time safety updates to ensure visitor safety.
Understanding the risks associated with Nepal’s flooding helps tourists plan their trips more effectively, encourages responsible travel, and supports local communities during the monsoon season. By staying informed and flexible, travelers can still experience Nepal’s rich culture, stunning landscapes, and adventurous treks, even during challenging weather conditions.
As you have probably heard in the news, Nepal has been hit by the rainstorm water flooding, almost all over Nepal. This includes the major places like Kathmandu, Butwal and Sauraha. Unfortunately, this natural disaster has caused more than 100s of people to lost their lifes, and we express are deepest condonceles to them.
In Sauraha anzzzzd the periphery of Chitwan National Park, there has been severe damange in certain areas, with the main Sauraha town completely flooded. The flood has swept some restauranats, while filling the bottom floor of some hotels. Some of the bridges inside the Chitwan National Park, which forms the route for jeep safaris needs maintenance, whereas all the areas of park requires cleanup.
With this flooding, we want to inform you about the possible impacts on tours you have already booked with us:
-
Until October 15th, authorities will not allow jeep safaris inside Chitwan National Park. Park officials plan to start cleaning and maintaining tracks and routes on September 30th, which may take at least two weeks before they fully reopen.
-
Although the jungle walk remains permitted inside the park, we may modify your itinerary to avoid muddy tracks until cleanup completes. We will still offer walks inside Chitwan National Park, following uphill routes to bypass muddy areas.
-
Canoe trips across the park border remain fully operational.
-
Jeep safaris in the Buffer Zone (which has no physical boundary with the park) continue to operate.
-
Tower night activities remain unaffected.
-
Visits to 20,000 Lake operate normally.
-
Birdwatching trips continue, but we may modify itineraries involving jeep safaris inside the park to match current conditions.
Timeline of Updates
-
28 September: Flooding occurs across various regions of Nepal.
-
29 September: Authorities plan to begin cleanup on 30 September.
-
30 September: Park officials conduct a site visit, identify two bridges needing repairs, and note that the roads remain rough. Maintenance crews will use tractors and dozers starting tomorrow.
-
02 October: Landslides periodically block the Muglin-Narayanghat highway, the main route from Kathmandu/Pokhara to Sauraha. Traffic clears and gets blocked frequently, so travel remains slow.
-
08 October: Jeep safaris inside Chitwan National Park will resume officially on 10 October. All roads and tracks have received maintenance after the flooding.
Due to Nepal’s Dashain festival on 13 October, we recommend allowing extra travel time to avoid delays.
We hope authorities complete cleanup and maintenance soon so all activities resume fully. Nepal Dynamic Eco Tours will continue to provide timely updates.
Regards,
