Sightseeing: Chitwan National Park
Chitwan National Park is like a treasure trove of nature’s wonders, boasting a rich tapestry of plants, animals, and birds. If you find yourself in Sauraha bright and early from Kathmandu or Pokhara, prepare for a delightful journey through nature’s marvels. Our short sightseeing tour, lasting about one to two hours, begins at the visitor center.
As we amble along the banks of the Rapti and Dhungre rivers, a world of enchantment unfolds before us. The Dhungre river merges gracefully with the Rapti, offering a picturesque view of open grasslands, dense forests, and the gentle slopes of Chura hill. This habitat is a lifeline for creatures big and small, from majestic mammals to vibrant avian species.
Keep your eyes peeled, for in the tranquil waters of the rivers, two different types of crocodiles bask in the sun. The Gharial crocodile, with its long, slender snout, is a sight to behold. This remarkable creature, known as the fish-eater crocodile, holds the title of being critically endangered in the world. Alongside it, the Marsh-Mugger crocodile, with its stout build, adds to the spectacle of nature’s diversity.
But the wonders don’t stop there. As we tread through the wilderness, we may chance upon some of the park’s common residents. Look out for graceful deer, mischievous monkeys, and the sturdy wild boar. If luck is on our side, we might even catch a glimpse of the iconic rhinoceros, a symbol of Chitwan’s conservation success.
As we crane our necks to the heavens, a kaleidoscope of colors greets us. Oriental Pied-Hornbills soar gracefully overhead, while Yellow-footed Green-Pigeons add a splash of vibrancy to the canopy. The Orange-breasted Green Pigeon, with its striking plumage, stands out amidst the foliage. And let’s not forget the kingfishers—Common, Pied, and Stork-billed—dashing flashes of blue and white against the verdant backdrop.
But it’s not just the birds that steal the show. The rhythmic tap-tap of woodpeckers echoes through the trees, with the Fulvous-breasted and Grey-headed varieties showcasing their unique beauty. Parakeets add their own chorus to the symphony of nature, while different Bushchats flit among the shrubs, their presence adding a touch of liveliness to the landscape.
Amidst this natural splendor, don’t forget to take a moment to appreciate the medicinal plants that call this habitat home. Their healing properties are a testament to nature’s wisdom and generosity.
As the day draws to a close, prepare to be enchanted by the spectacle of a Chitwan sunset. The sun dips below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the river and the surrounding jungle. It’s a moment of tranquility and beauty—a fitting end to our journey through this magical wilderness.
In Chitwan National Park, every step reveals a new wonder, every glance a new marvel. It’s a place where nature reigns supreme, and where the wonders of the natural world are waiting to be discovered.
